Browsing affects Mind and Body!

"In doing daily activities our body works a lot, and then takes rest during sleep. We use our mind to think and then act. Usually we think only for a few seconds at a time, but act for a longer time putting our body to work more than the mind. But we should not put our body to work sparingly, and go on thinking for a long time: it is against our human nature. Even if you do so at any time, you must let your mind to stop its thinking, relax and take rest - by sleeping. Otherwise the mind itself may stop its working! So, do not load unnecessarily your mind. Divert yourself in other activities and take rest or sleep to relax both the mind and body to make them to be healthy at all times." - from the blog, Kindling Thoughts.
Does this content has any relevance here in this blog? Yes it does have: in Web browsing and Computer work we mostly use our mind to think, and use our body sparingly! Sparingly used body may make it susceptible for Diabetes mellitus, and a heavily taxed mind may also be a factor to cause Hypertension - in the long run! Be aware of this. Be active bodily and take rest often as said above to avoid these and stay healthy!

Healthy Eyes for Computer Vision!

In doing computer work for long hours, one must first prepare himself/herself, the work place and then the computer for avoiding any eye ailment. The person must wear the spectacles if he or she has one for vision correction, sit erect on a firm chair, about 18 inches from the computer monitor screen, with monitor’s top about 3 inches above the eye level. The person must have slept well and be fresh; should have brushed, taken shower and food.

Next, the
place should be well lit uniformly both at day and night, with light source. There should not be any bright light coming from the background of the computer or any glare from the monitor’s screen formed due to reflection of the light source behind the person. The place should be a well ventilated one with amble space to walk about freely.

The computer monitor screen must be adjusted to have the optimum level of Contrast and Brightness suitable to the illumination inside the room.

Then while doing the computer work, the person must not go on and on reading or referring to the screen – key board must be used (typing work). At regular intervals, say every forty minutes, the person should take the eyes off from the computer and look at a distance, close the eyes and take a few deep breaths of air, or get up and walk a few paces around and have chat with colleagues, and then resume the work.

After the work is over and turning off the computer, the person can do eye exercises in fresh air to free the eyes from locking and then wash the face with cool water; go to bed earlier, not so late on that day of long hours of computer work, to have a good and healthy vision the next day!

Exercises to prevent pain in Computer Work!

Computer aches (pains) resulting out of computer work can be avoided by practicing the following exercises as a routine, after each session of work:

  1. Flexing and extending fingers, wrists, forearms - at their joints, and rotating the arms at the shoulder joints - all these shall relieve the pain or spasm in the hands, arms and shoulders.

  2. Leg swinging in front and back, and its side lifting shall relieve the congestion pain of pooling of blood that results out of the continuous sitting in front of the computer; and these shall also increase the blood flow to the limbs and internal organs. A few sit-and-stands shall also give the same good effects.

  3. Eye exercises – moving eyes up and down, to the left and the right, diagonally, and rotating eyes clockwise and anti-clockwise, shifting eyes from a near object to a distant one and concentrating on it, blinking at intervals of computer work – these all will prevent or relieve the Sore Eye and other eye related conditions.

  4. Breathing exercises – simply inhaling and exhaling, with the eyes shut in sitting posture, shall rejuvenate you much.

  5. Adding to these, you shall have to take rest at frequent intervals during the computer work - walk around and chat with friends or colleagues to refresh your mind.

Beckoning Pain through Computer Work!

The pain resulting out of computer usage is mainly dependent upon the posture we assume and the duration of our computer work. As posture is determined by the chair we sit on, it has to be of appropriate dimensions. Moreover the computer table platform on which our wrist rests should be on level with the arm of the chair – to avoid the strain on the forearm and offer relaxation.

Neck pain may arise out of our eye level to the monitor screen not being on the normal line of vision – being either above or below it. To avoid it you can adjust either the height of the chair or that of the computer table, and also the monitor axis at its pedestal, to a slighter extent.

The longer period of repetitive computer work shall usher in pain or spasm in the hands and shoulders. The pain will be distressing if you do the work continuously without break, and for a longer time.

It is better to do the computer work at daytime having natural light. Constant staring on the CRT monitor screen, reading and doing computer work at night shall bring you soreness of the eyes, sleep disorders and mental block out at daytime! You can be sure of having these after you have worked under insufficient lighting at night!

A Mark Guaranteeing a Standard Product!

We all see this mark, CE on most of the electronic and other products in every place of the world. What is this and what is the use of this mark?

It is an abbreviated form for the French words “Conformite’ Europeene.” It means “European Conformity.”

If a product bears this CE mark, it is guaranteed that you have a quality product as it complies with European standards of health, safety and environmental protection. Such a marked product of any country can be purchased in the open market anywhere in the world! No restrictions are imposed on the movement of these products within selected countries. Even the Government departments can place them directly in the market for sale, away from its production countries.

This mark is a wonder everywhere!

Corrective Measures Prevent Computer Aches

When you work on computer for extended hours, without breaks or exercises in between, you could get many body problems. Out of these pain or stiffness is the major one felt for the first time after such use. This pain or stiffness or discomfort may be in shoulder joint, elbow or the wrist. To prevent these we shall have to keep the hands (elbow region) close to the body (trunk, flank region) and key in the keyboard with the palms facing inwards. The elbows must rest on the keyboard table or on the arm rest of the chair (keyboard should be in level with the arm rest). Hands should not hang from the wrist: wrists also need a resting place on the keyboard table. As gripping the mouse too tightly may affect all the joints altogether with spasms, hold it lightly and gently, and release the grip when it is not required, and rest the hand then and there.

Luckily these problems are temporary, and are reversible easily if they are dealt with early by effecting these corrective measures.

Time Saving in Computer Work!

Time spent before the computer will be the longest one when compared to other works or hobbies. So, do not waste your valuable time in searching or finding the way out for problems yourself. Be well informed beforehand about the procedure to be followed. Enquire the people with good exposure and experience in the field. Fix a time limit for your work and adhere to it without any relaxation or leniency in it. Plan beforehand your work topics confining them to a well limited extent. It will be better to let in your To-do-list well inside the allotted time allowing some free excess time for rising out from work to do the eye exercises or to have a talk with colleagues or to have a stroll around the place. If a work topic seems to extend beyond the time limit either postpone it if it is a less important one or if it is an important work do it but postpone the next one to another session. Never go for extending the work for completion sake or for giving perfection to it. Adhere to the planned time. At such times think about this that there are rather more important duties or more enjoyable work waiting for you in this world that have to be one by you, and that this extended computer work may affect your body health and affect also your harmonious relationship with family members, colleagues or the boss. If you could really follow these guidelines and could control yourself, and above all your desiring mind, you shall not become addicted to the computer and shall have a good body health and save also your valuable time to the most.

Working in Easier Ways and Pleasing to the eyes

We can use our computer by modifying its display suitably so that each of us could work on it more conveniently. Even with wearing our specs for the near vision if we find it difficult to read or type the fonts on the computer screen, there are the following ways to tide over the problem:

  1. You can click the View button on the tool bar, in case you are working on a Document, and then click on Zoom to open the Zoom dialog box. Check in the radio buttons or use the number box to choose your desired percentage of magnification and then click OK.

  2. Or to get a quick magnification select the desired zoom level at the status bar at the bottom. After working with the magnification you can restore the zoom level to Normal by using this again or by selecting the View button as said above and choosing the option in it. The whole document will be then displayed in the normal size of fonts (the font size first selected by you in the Font Size button).

  3. When you are making a document or browsing the web you can click the View button of the browser and select the Text Size from the list to increase, decrease the size or to restore to the normal size.

  4. Or you can scroll down or up the wheel of the Mouse after pressing the Ctrl key, for decreasing or increasing the magnification. This could be used for working on document also.

These could make your computer work or the web browsing easier, convenient and pleasing to your eyes. (Note this: the tips for browsing in the points third and fourth works only with Mozilla Firefox!).

'Refresh' yourself to avoid 'Stop'

While sitting in front of computer and doing monotonous work for hours, you get bored. You can have chat with colleagues. But this is not possible always. You can get relaxation by seeing beautiful flowers – that too on computer screen itself. Yes, many websites (e.g. India Garden - Garden Bloggers Blooms Day) offer such flowers with relaxing colors to soothe the worn out and bored mind. You can try one of them now and then. Or you can listen to pleasing music of your choice through head phones and relax and refresh yourself.

Safeguarding Your Body while doing computer work

  1. Wear loose pants and avoid wearing tight pants at workplace.

  2. Move now and then rising out from the seat and walk for a few minutes.

  3. Breathe easily and deeply – without holding the breath at any level, for about two minutes or so while being at work before computer.

  4. Drink enough water before attending to any computer work, especially when you are in an A/C room or in a hot room at Summer.

  5. For every half an hour you can do side wise rotating body exercises, side wise bending exercises and also sit-ups.

  6. If you feel hot at sitting on the chair, rise out and change the chair to a good ventilated one.

  7. Take a good quantity of night sleep. If this is not possible take a short nap at afternoon the next day or go to bed earlier at night the next day. Without having good sleep do not sit before computer for work.

  8. Always have good light in the room where you do your computer work.

  9. After rising out from bed, do not go straight away to do the computer work. Wait for the body to adjust to the waken up state for a few minutes and also wait till enough daylight comes inside the room, in case you rose at early morning.

  10. Never work in darkness. At night have artificial lights during the work.

  11. Increase the brightness as daylight increases from the morning. Adjust the contrast down as the daylight decreases towards the evening. Have balanced same levels of both contrast and brightness at the optimal position at mornings and evenings.

  12. Doing the following eye exercise will surely relax your eyes and prevent it from becoming sore: ‘seeing the tip of the finger and then shifting the eyes to an object in a far off place, and seeing the object fixedly for about fifteen seconds and then returning to the finger tip. This is to be repeated for four to five times. This exercise can be done after each session of computer work.

13. While attending to the computer work you should take away your eyes from the computer screen and blink for about twenty times. If this is done every half an hour, it will prevent your eyes becoming dry.

14. At the end of your each computer work you can do the following facial exercises to increase the blood circulation: the act of lifting up the eyebrows, closing the eyes and screwing up them, ballooning the cheeks, the act of showing the teeth, the acts of opening down and closing the jaws, and moving the lower jaw to both sides.

Following these guidelines shall safeguard your body from illnesses, that may be acquired while doing computer work.

Necessity for starting this blog rose out as I felt that with blogs of such type we could make pleasanter, and probably extend, our longevity – the years of existence! Yes, it could save our valuable time that we waste in correcting, deleting, redoing,, searching or doing everything on the Computer to get the job done. And that we waste in searching in the Web for websites and for information in the search engine results, and in finding out the required tab, link etc. on the web page, or that in referring to the Help Center content. I am sharing my experience here in this blog that could save all its readers’ time. So, I invite all to visit this blog frequently. I also suggest to all the readers to share their experiences with me by email. Or they can start their own such blogs – so that I could save my time also!
